Growth Form: Small deciduous trees or shrubs, rarely perennial herbs with woody bases, often with a rank smell when bruised.

Leaves: Leaves compound (pinnately or rarely bipinnately compound). Opposite. Leaflet margins serrate. Petiolate. Stipules present or absent.

Flowers: Flowers usually with both sexes in each inflorescence, in compound, corymbose cymes or many–flowered, paniculate inflorescences, in basically cymose inflorescences. Flowers bisexual (perfect) or unisexual. Calyx 3–5-toothed or nearly absent. Corolla actinomorphic, rotate, 3–5-lobed. Stamens 5, inserted at base of corolla; anthers dithecal, opening by longitudinal slits. Ovary semi-inferior to inferior; ovule placentation axile, pendulous, anatropous; style 1.

Fruit: Fruit drupaceous; globose; with 3–5 nutlets. Seeds with oily; fleshy endosperm.
